Read and Publish: Sage
This guide covers how academics can access journals the library subscribes to, and we support our researchers to publish gold open access papers in these journals.
BCU Library has a subscription to the Sage Jisc Read and Publish deal for 2024.
This deal covers the fees for the following:
- Reading access to all Sage journals 1999-present (including those published on behalf of the Royal Society of Medicine and Institution of Mechanical Engineers)
- Publishing articles Gold Open Access in Sage Choice (hybrid) journals.
Criteria and restrictions
Author eligibility
The corresponding author must be affiliated with Birmingham City University.
Article eligibility
- Original research papers (not editorials, announcements or book reviews).
- The article acceptance date must be in 2024.
Journal eligibility
- 1000+ Sage Choice hybrid journals
- Fully-OA journals are not covered, though you would get 20% discount on their APCs
How to access
- You will need to identify yourself as affiliated with BCU, for instance by submitting your article with your @bcu.ac.uk email address.
- When your article is accepted, Sage will contact you to ask if you want to publish Open Access.
- Your article will then come through to the library’s Open Access dashboard for approval.

Please note we cannot cover APCs for the fully-Gold Open Access journals but you would get 20% discount on their APCs.
