How do I submit an Inter-Library Loans request?
You can access the Inter-Library Loan request form from this page or when you search items beyond the Library collections.
Tips to fill the request form:
- Keep your multi-factor authentication device handy as you will need to sign in to Library Search with your BCU email address and password to access the form.
- You need to provide either the International Standard Serial Book Number (ISBN) or International Standard Serial Number (ISSN).
Please see the following information on how to find this: How to find the ISSN or ISBN Number (word document)
and How to find an ISSN or ISBN number (video).
- The form can auto-fill an article's information if you have the article's, DOI (Digital Object Identifier) or PMID (PubMed ID).
- If you are requesting something else than a book or articles, choose the closest match and use the form's comment field to specify what you need. We will contact you if we need to confirm any details.

- Read the copyright terms and check the box if you agree before submitting your request.
What can I borrow from other libraries?
You can request:
- Books
- Music scores and sets
- One copy of a chapter from a single book
- One copy of an article from a journal issue
- Theses & Dissertations
How long does it take for the item to arrive?
This depends on the item you request, so please plan ahead in case of delays, but our usual supply times are:
- Electronic book chapters, journal articles and other documents: Up to one week
- Print books: One to two weeks
How much do Inter-Library Loans requests cost?
There is no cost to pay when submitting Inter-Library Loan requests.
If you need to request a renewal, and the lending library agrees to this, the first renewal is free. Subsequent renewals cost £2 each.
You are liable for the replacement cost charged by the lending library of any items damaged or lost while on loan to you, so please look after your Inter-Library Loans. You will be charged for replacement once a loan is 42 days or more overdue.
You can pay ILL charges at the library Self-Service Kiosks, or online via your Library Search account. We accept credit and debit card payments.
How will I receive the requested item?
Copies of book chapters, journal articles and other documents
We can usually supply an electronic copy sent to your BCU email address, either as a link for download or as an attachment.
Links for download may have special instructions to access the file, or may have limits on the number of times you can access them, so please contact us if you need any help with this.
You may retain one copy of the document for as long as you need to, but please:
- do not make further copies of the document
- do not redistribute the document
Book and other physical items
You will receive a notification when your item is ready to collect from your chosen pickup location. You will need to attend site during library staffed hours to collect the item.
If you made an error when choosing a pickup location, please email our Inter-Library Loans team, and we will relocate it to your preferred collection site, assuming there is still enough time left for you to collect it.
How long can I keep a loaned item?
The length of the loan varies depending on where we were able to obtain it from, but typically ranges between one to six weeks.
You should attempt to use an Inter-Library Loan within the original loan period, but if you need it for longer we may be able to renew items for you.
Renewing an Inter-Library Loan
Please request a renewal by the original return by date at the latest by emailing our Inter-Library Loans team.
From 3 January 2023, you will have the option to receive one free Inter-Library Loan renewal*, when borrowing a print loan from another library, where this is permitted by the lending institution. Any subsequent renewals permitted by the lending institution will attract a charge of £2 per renewal.
If you do choose to renew an Inter-Library Loan more than once, a charge of £2 will be added to your library account for each subsequent renewal that is agreed by the lending institution. You can pay this charge by phone or in person at Curzon Library and Mary Seacole Library during staffed hours, at the library Self-Service Kiosks, or online via your Library Search account. We accept credit and debit card payments.
*If we are unable to renew the item, you should return it by the original due date.
You can return your loans by using the book return facilities at any of our site libraries, or by handing them in to one of our Library Help Desks during library staffed hours.
