Open Access Resources: Open Access Read & Publish Deals

Open Access Publishing Deals

Library and Learning Resources currently subscribes to several national ‘read and publish’ deals negotiated by Jisc, who is active in negotiating with publishers across HE.

These deals allow for BCU staff and students to not only have ‘read’ access to the material (in the normal way we access online resources), but also allow BCU researchers to publish Gold Open Access articles in selected journals without incurring article processing charges. All these deals have different criteria and restrictions. Please check the individual tabs on the right for each deal, and make sure that both your article and the journal are eligible before you submit a funding request. You can use this simple search on Sherpa to find out whether the journal you want to publish in is eligible for APC funding under these deals.

Elsevier Jisc Agreement – April 2022 - December 2024

Author eligibility: The corresponding author must be affiliated with Birmingham City University. This will be easiest for us to check if you submit using your BCU email address.

Article eligibility: Primary research and review articles that have an acceptance date between 2022 and 2024.

Journal eligibility: Only hybrid journals are covered by this deal. Please check before submitting that the journal you have chosen is on this list: https://www.kbplus.ac.uk/kbplus7/publicExport/pkg/2786 When you submit your article, you should see the following message:

Please indicate your Publishing Options
This is a hybrid journal. The journal publishes both subscription and OA articles. We will present your personalized Publishing Options based on the Affiliations and Funding details you have given us. Please note that at this stage in your submission, you are only indicating your preference. We will ask you to make a final choice after the journal has accepted your manuscript.

Fully-Open-Access journals are not covered and the library will not be able to fund the Article Processing Charge. These journals are listed here: https://www.kbplus.ac.uk/kbplus7/publicExport/pkg/2787 . If you wish to publish in one of these journals, you will need another source of funding to cover the APC.
In addition, some journals will have additional fees such as submission or editorial fees. These are not covered by this deal and will invoice the author directly, so please check before you submit.

How to access: Please double-check when you submit your article that it is a primary research article in an eligible journal (see above). When you submit your article, if it is eligible, you should be given this publishing option:

These are the available publishing options.

If the journal accepts your article, you can change your mind about these options.

Note: editors and reviewers can only see your selection after acceptance.

Elsevier may also contact you after acceptance and ask you to fill in a ‘rights and access form’ with OA publication options. Again, you should see a statement like the example above saying that as an author affiliated with BCU, the UK JISC Elsevier Transitional agreement will cover the APC.
